EVERY LEAKAGE COUNTS
Leaks can be irritating because of the inconvenient damage they can bring. They can begin as smaller innocent drips, this can last days, weeks or months.
If not detected earlier a small leak will graduate into a larger leak. A larger leak might cause havoc and destruction. Larger leaks will first be felt with the exorbitant water bill. To avoid paying that water bill and save your house from destruction begin with;
WATER METER
Water meter work like a vehicle odometer. They record the cumulative amount of water that has passed through the meter. It has a round circular object that spins around to measure the quantity and volume of water being used.
If the meter is spinning while nobody is using the water then it means volume of water is being lost. It might spin during the day while you are at work and at night when asleep.
A slower spin indicates lower volume of water is lost and the leak is in early stages. A faster spin indicates that it had been leaking for sometime until it got worst.
GROWING VEGETATION
Leakage can start somewhere outside in the yard before water makes entry into the house. You might notice patches of more greener grass in one location than the other location. This does not mean that the soil is fertile in one location. It means the roots will cause moisture to seep into yard causing sink holes that are very visible.
It is evident the might might be experiencing corrosion and rust. The leak has been irrigating the grass for sometime. This happens with old galvanized pipes.
It is time to replace the whole pipe.
HUSHING VOICE
Ocean produce ambient wave but a dripping faucet is irritating. It is easier to notice a leaking hose bib and replace it. It is easier to adjust a toilet system that is flushing itself. This is because they are visible and easy to see the leak.
Some pipe joint behind the wall experience pressure. If the pressure is not regulated it might make some pipes weak. Some pipe can handle certain amount of pressure.
You can hear a hushing voice in the crawl space during day and night. It means the pipe has started leaking and needs new fittings.
STAINED DRYWALL
A dry wall is pretty sturdy but when it comes in contact with water for a long duration of time it gets damaged. Stains and discoloration are good signs of water damage.
The only solution is opening up the wall and replacing the pipe and fittings. Avoid fittings like shark bite because they last for a short duration of time.
MUSTY SMELL
During freezing temperature, the pipe can be forced to expand and contract. The contraction might crack the pipe and cause it to leak. The leaking water will come in contact with the dirt in the crawl space. This atmosphere creates moisture that combines with stagnant air in dark corners.
This in turn leads to growth of mold and milder causing musty smell.
Make sure pipes are buried deeper in soil to avoid freezing.
